Maternity Photography at Lair O' the Bear

in Idledale, Colorado

Maternity photography is a beautiful way to honor and celebrate the miracle of life and the journey of motherhood. As a Littleton maternity photographer, capturing these tender, fleeting moments is one of the most rewarding parts of my work. A recent maternity photography session in Idledale, Colorado reminded me just how magical this chapter of life can be—especially when shared with those closest to you.

For this maternity session, we met at one of my absolute favorite locations in the foothills: Lair o’ the Bear Park in Idledale. Just a short drive from Littleton, this scenic park offers a peaceful escape with breathtaking backdrops that feel straight out of a storybook. The lush greenery, winding trails, and soft golden light filtering through the trees create an atmosphere that feels both whimsical and intimate—the perfect setting for documenting a growing family.

Curious about other maternity sessions?  Here's a cutie sesh with one pregnant mama, a proud dad and two silly toddler girls.

A Maternity Session Full of Emotion and Connection

This session was particularly special, as it included not just the glowing mama-to-be and her partner, but also their sweet toddler daughter. Including siblings in maternity photos adds such a meaningful layer to the story. It's not just about the anticipation of a new baby—it's about celebrating this season of transformation as a family.

I always encourage families to bring their children into these sessions when possible. It helps to document the full scope of your family dynamic and gives older siblings a chance to feel connected to the experience. One of my favorite moments from this session was when the little girl gently touched her mom’s growing belly with curiosity and love—completely unscripted, pure, and heart-melting.

Why Lair o’ the Bear Is Perfect for Maternity Photos

If you're considering a maternity photography session in Idledale, Colorado, Lair o’ the Bear Park checks all the boxes. Tucked between Morrison and Evergreen, this popular park offers a mix of natural elements: a flowing creek, rustic wooden bridges, rocky cliffs, wildflower patches, and dreamy light all day long. Whether you’re looking for dramatic mountain vibes or cozy forest nooks, this location provides a wide variety of looks within walking distance from the parking lot.

In spring and summer, the park comes alive with vibrant green foliage and wildflowers. In fall, you’ll find golden leaves and soft, rich tones perfect for autumn-inspired sessions. Winter can also be beautiful here, although it depends on the weather—some years it's crisp and snowy, while others are mild and dry.

If you’re planning a photo session at Lair o’ the Bear, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Arrive early. Parking is very limited and often fills up quickly, especially during weekends and golden hour.
  • Pack hand sanitizer. There are restrooms on-site, but they occasionally run out of soap.
  • Dress with nature in mind. Neutral tones, soft textures, and flowing fabrics photograph beautifully.

A Look Into This Morning Session

This particular session was held in the early morning.  Sometimes mornings are best for toddlers, Lair O’ The Bear offers some shade, but expect some full sun too.  The sunlight filtered through the trees, creating a magical, glowing atmosphere. The expectant mother wore a shimmering champagne gown that caught the light with every movement—a perfect reflection of the joy and grace she carried.

We started with family cuddles on a bench tucked into the greenery, capturing gentle moments between the parents and their daughter. Then, as their toddler explored the area (and collected a few flowers along the way), we captured her wonder and curiosity—an important part of this story, too. Children often ground us in the present moment, and I love how sessions like this can feel so natural and unposed because of it.

One of the highlights was capturing the mother alone on a bridge surrounded by trees and golden sunlight. Her silhouette framed by the wooden railings and long shadows created a timeless, serene portrait that speaks volumes without saying a word. These quiet, reflective moments are just as important as the giggles and snuggles.

The Importance of Documenting This Season

Maternity photos aren’t just about your baby bump—they’re about preserving this fleeting, transformative season of your life. The anticipation, the love, the little details that often go by in a blink of an eye.

Including siblings in your maternity session is a beautiful way to honor the entire family dynamic. It gives older children a sense of pride and connection, and it captures a story you’ll cherish for years to come—especially as your babies grow.

Maternity photography tells a story of where your family is today, how your love is growing, and what you're looking forward to next.
